“Annette has had nightmares for as long as she can remember. However, it was not until a strange encounter that Annette realizes her dreams have a deeper meaning than she could have imagined. In her search for answers, Annette is drawn into a world of dangerous creatures that human kind forgot exists. Once drawn in, Annette can never return to the life she knew.” Amazon blurb

I loved the premise for this book. I’m such a sucker for this kind of stories, that I was sure I was going to love it!

For some reason, though, it didn’t really work for me, which is a pity.

I think partly it was because it took so long to get the plot moving along. There’s a prologue that sets the scene up for mystery and scary things and then... We spend the next hundred pages or so going through the main character’s life.

I don’t mind that. I understand that knowing our lead is important. I do start to have issues when it involves making coffee step by step. Making toast step by step. And so on. The fact that she’s a vet should have helped me sympathize – my mom is a vet and I grew up breathing the job, but... Everything happened so slowly at first that I couldn’t get into the story.

Perhaps that’s what happened afterwards – I couldn’t get into the flow, so I couldn’t care much about the outcome. It was okay to read, but I wasn’t invested enough to recommend it. This is one of those, “choose your yourself” titles, I’m afraid!

There’s some interesting use of mediums and ghost stories, though, and eventually things picked up, but it was a bit too late for me. Still, you might want to check it.

  1. That's such a shame, really. I'm finding it harder and harder to get into books these days. I think having so much choice all the time might have something to do with it.
Nevertheless, it's a great and honest review. I really appreciate it and I'll steer clear.

    1. I had this spell where all the books I picked were very slow or with good-sized faults. It almost depressed me, and I had to just go and grab something light, for fun. Then I could get into reading again... I find the technique helps!

Thanks for the comment, glad you liked the review ;)

    1. The cover's just gorgeous! The premise's not half bad, either. I'll be looking forward to your comments if you do read it in the end!

  3. Hmm. Well, I suppose I shall steer clear of this one then. I think there's something to be said for setting a foundation for a character, but I think it shows the strength of the author when they can do this while moving the plot forward. Characterization and plot development are not mutually exclusive after all. It's a shame though, because the blurb does sound interesting, though vague :)

    1. In the book's defense, I have to say I had read several slow books and probably ra out of patience for a description of coffee making... But I do think that the review was fair in that it did drag too much and failed to show the point.

The blurb and cover completely captured me when I got the request! The prologue's good, too. It just... I felt it didn't keep up. If you can read a couple of sample chapters before deciding to buy it, then go ahead, though. I'd love to hear your thoughts!
