“When Kaylee Cavanaugh screams, someone dies.
So when teen pop star Eden croaks onstage and Kaylee doesn't wail, she knows something is dead wrong. She can't cry for someone who has no soul.
The last thing Kaylee needs right now is to be skipping school, breaking her dad's ironclad curfew and putting her too-hot-to-be-real boyfriend's loyalty to the test. But starry-eyed teens are trading their souls: a flickering lifetime of fame and fortune in exchange for eternity in the Netherworld—a consequence they can't possibly understand.
Kaylee can't let that happen, even if trying to save their souls means putting her own at risk….” GoodReads’ blurb

Next instalment of the series, and still reading so good!

A note: I always try not to spoil things, but I might mention stuff that happened in the previous books. Be warned!

I really liked Tod in this title. Mostly because at the end of book one any idea I could get about a love triangle was shot to death (I just can’t see Tod and Nash as rivals) so this chance to look into his most sensible part was really cute.

I was talking with some friends about being team Tod or team Nash, and for me this book explains why I’m team Tod, I guess: he will stop at nothing if he cares. He’s a good person, but not too good to do what needs to be done. I like a guy with his priorities sorted out.

And Nash, to be honest, made me a little nervous. He’s the bad boy gone right, if that even makes sense, but while his chemistry with Kaylee in book one was cute and sexy and I loved to read about them, book two gives me more... overwhelming feelings. For example, they seem to be unable to go without physical contact. I get the whole being all over one another when we’re alone because they’re teens and in love and all, but do they really need to be so clingy? If I’m trying to have a serious, life-and-death conversation with an unknown girl and trying to make my case, I sure won’t be reclining against my boyfriend.

The one other thing I didn’t quite relate to was Kaylee’s guilt. She seems to believe that she’s somehow responsible for people’s bad choices, for making amends for stuff that didn’t have anything to do with her in the first place. I’d have felt better if Kaylee were bought into My Soul to Save’s plot for loyalty or friendship, or to pay Tod back, and not because of a misplaced sense of guilt.

Then again, I might not be such a bad person because there is a certain thing at the end that doesn’t strike me at all and she’s pretty horrified, so... (if you’ve read it, you know what I’m talking about).

Those small buggering things aside, though, My Soul to Save was a great read that I enjoyed thoroughly. Fast paced, fun, with great characters. The myth Rachen Vincent has build for her series keeps getting more and more complicated, and it still is one of the things I like the most.

So, recommended? Yeah, the whole series is recommended! Judging from what I’ve read so far, that is two books out of five (laughs). It’s building up to be one of my favorites.

  1. Yes, I totally agree with you Ron! I hope Kaylee would be a much better heroine in the next books. The guilt! aaagh. She's crazy. lol. =) I want to read the next in the series but some books get in the way :B I know that you understand what I mean hehe.

    1. I'm going to get started with the next book, which according to a lot of people is the weakest of them all... But I really want to get to four and five, where the promised Tod-ness lies! :P

I agree, the guilt as driving force is just... argh. Totally not working. I can't relate to that at all! I could relate to doing the same thing for plenty other reasons, but not a misplaced sense of responsibility for someone I don't even know.

Okay, I'll stop before I go off in rant-mode lol Great to see you again, April! :*

  2. Bad boys gone right always make me uneasy too. I just keep expecting them to go bad again, like fruit that's rotten on the inside (yuck, lol). I actually gave up on this maybe a year ago. I think I just intended to put it on hold, but for whatever reason, I never went back to it. I'll wait to read your review of book 3 to see if it's worth going back to.

    1. Hehehe... I tend to feel like the bad was their natural state and the "good" feels like a bit of an aberration... But then again, I'm a sucker for bad guys ;)

I think I know what you mean about putting it on hold and then a pile of TBR getting in the way. Too easy! But I'm going to get started on book 3 tonight, so the review will eventually come up. I'll let you know if you need to squeeze the series back into your schedule! :)
