Starting over sucks.

When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I'd pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring.... until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.

And then he opened his mouth.

Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something...unexpected happens.

The hot alien living next door marks me.

You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon's touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I'm getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.

If I don't kill him first, that is.” GoodReads’ blurb

This particular review is going to get me fried by my bookish friends. Greatly whacked over the head stuff... But well, here goes:

I liked Obsidian.

... Which, yeah, it’s good news, but also means I didn’t love it either. Which is a bother, because everyone loved it so, and I did enjoy the prequel Shadows (read about that here) a great deal more than I enjoyed the actual first book.

Let it be said that all the ingredients are there, though: super hot guy with a bad case of bipolar personality, common girl who gets his attention no one knows how, dating and dancing and heroic moments, and moments of action.

But while I bought Shadows entirely and without a second thought, I just didn’t feel the overwhelming chemistry between Daemon and Katy. He’s under Merriam Webster’s definition of Mixed Signals, and she’s totally ensnared in spite of his bad attitude—and I take it kind of personally when a girl can’t walk away from a boy who’s being downright rude to her because of his chiseled abs. Their relationship clearly evolves, but I’m still not sure why.

By the end, though, I could completely see why Daemon would actually fall for Katy. And I did like her reaction to learning of his genuine interest! Also, things moved a bit out of pure romance entanglement and into mystery and adventure... Which is what I loved so much more about Shadows.

So, while I’m not as enthusiastic as most of my friends about this particular book, I’m still going to follow the series and I’m still going to be a Daemon Street Team member with my wonderful group, Got Daemon?, because I think that Obsidian is the basis and things are just about to take off (Shadows got written/published afterwards, even if the events mark it as a prequel).

    1. Yeah, I know! Everyone says the chemistry is there but... It didn't jump at me, not like I want it to when that's what makes the book tick. Still, it was fun to read!

      Thanks for the comment! :)

  2. Hi Ron! Hahaha! You cracked me up. Don't worry I'm not going to fry you up ;P LOL. I loved Obsidian but I'm not the SUUUUPER DUUUUPER FAN who will die swooning over Daemon. If it's Four or Jace, then maybe hehe. But definitely this is one of my favorite books. It's interesting and new to see your opinion. I miss you! HUgs from me! =D

    xoxoxo!

    1. Hahaha! I wouldn't be fighting you over Jace, April. He's the best! Well, right after Magnus Bane anyway... ;)

I miss you lots too! Glad to see you around (and hope to see more of you!) Hugs!!

  4. I've heard about this book before and I've seen many blogs post about how awesome Daemon is, but this would be the first review that I've read about Obsidian. I haven't read the book either, but judging from the summary, while promising, I can see why you don't love it as much as everyone else.

I start to feel that every YA book is about a bad boy some way or another. But the alien aspect isn't too common, so that's definitely a plus. When I get the chance, I'll give it a shot. Thanks for the review!

    1. You're right about bad boys :) There's a lot of those! I tend to like them, though, as long as they are consistently bad--it's the bipolar cases that get to me.

But, yes, the alien aspect was quite original and I wasn't lying when I said that things are looking up now that the foundations are in place and more action's coming. I look forward to what you think of this one if you do get a chance to read it!

  5. I wasn't too fond of this one either. In fact, I have issues with Armentrout's readiness to plagiarize, which is perhaps more ecident in Half-Blood than in this book. I CAN tell you that it does get better/more interesting, and the chemistry definitely improves in the second book.
