The Protectors Blog Tour: Promising Hope Soundtrack

Hey, everyone! I'm Emily, and my YA Epic Fantasy series is on tour right now. I was here on Ron's blog not too long ago with the book soundtrack for Promising Light and now I thought I'd do the soundtrack for its sequel, Promising Hope. Check it out!

"Little Talks" by Of Monsters and Men

(Grace) Some days I can't even trust myself
(Dar) It's killing me to see you this way
(Grace) Some days I don't know if I am wrong or right
(Dar) Your mind is playing tricks on you, my dear
(Both) You're gone gone gone away
I watched you disappear
All that's left is a ghost of you
Now we're torn torn torn apart, there's nothing we can do
Just let me go we'll meet again soon
Now wait wait wait for me
Please hang around
I'll see you when I fall asleep

Wow, this song is PERFECT for Grace and Dar in Promising Hope. They even have the guy and girl sing different parts that match what Grace and Dar are going through. As you might imagine, there is a lot of emotional turmoil on the romantic front ;)

"Eyes on Fire" by Blue Foundation

I'll seek you out

Flay you alive
One more word and you won't survive
And I'm not scared
Of your stolen power
I see right through you any hour

I like to think of this song from all of the shape changers (especially Evan) to the Protectors. They're ready to fight and they're not scared anymore of what they can do.

"Fix You" by Coldplay

When you try your best, but you don't succeed
When you get what you want, but not what you need
When you feel so tired, but you can't sleep
Stuck in reverse

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

This song applies to a few different people in the book. A lot of people have gone through a lot -- Sashe, Dar, Evan -- and they're all kind of taking care of each other.

"The Weight of Love" by Snow Patrol

A new empire beckons, a new kingdom in the distance
No gods are present, just the sky, the earth, and us
No wings no halos, nor the thunder in the footsteps
'Cause fear and anger, they are law unto themselves
And you love the little signs of life
You love it when we lose our minds
You love these little wars of words
You love it when they call your name

My heart is thumping, I can feel it in my fingers
No fear, no anger, we are law unto ourselves

It’s the weight of love in your arms
It’s the weight of love in your arms
It’s the weight of love so gentle in your arms

This song reminds me of Evan and Sierra, as though Sierra were singing it and Evan was "you". Especially "We are a law unto ourselves." In Promising Hope, Evan takes matters into his own hands and he's not going to stop fighting until he feels like the shape changers are free.

"No Light, No Light" in Florence + The Machine

You are the night time fear
You are the morning when it's clear
When it's over you'll start
You're my head
You're my heart

No light, no light in your bright blue eyes
I never knew daylight could be so violent
A revelation in the light of day
You can't choose what stays and what fades away

And I'd do anything to make you stay
No light, no light
No light
Tell me what you want me to say

Another song from Sierra to Evan (who doesn't have blue eyes ;). Evan distances himself from Sierra in pursuit of the man who cursed his family. Sierra is left holding onto him in fleeting moments in the midst of his desire for revenge.

"Pray for Rain" by Massive Attack

Dull residue of what once was
A shattered cloud of swirling doves
And their eyes change
As they learn to see through flames
And their necks crane
As they turn to pray for rain

Drops on rocks fall fast and fleeting
Hearts and wings commence to beating
Woods unseen with all believing
Vision walls fall all receding
Vision walls fall all receding

This is kind of a weird song (just look at that video thumbnail), but this song seems kind of hopeful and dark at the same time. Weird how words and music can do that, huh? I think the shape changers are hopefully about the future but they know there is still a lot of struggling in the future.
